What Is The Best Hair Nit Treatment?
There are basically three ways that you can get rid of hair nits:
1. Insecticide Shampoos
Firstly, there are the over the counter chemical nit treatment products (basically insecticides). Recent research has shown that head lice are now building up a resistance to these types of nits treatments making them 30% less effective. It is important that these insecticides are not used as a preventative measure – only consider if infestation is confirmed. They can also cause impact to the environment and are unlikely to remove the nits (the eggs of head lice) so re-infestation can occur.
Another potential reported side effect is skin and scalp irritation with the potential for a rash to develop on sensitive skin/scalps.
Some types of insecticides are available over the counter, such as:
• malathion
• phenothrin
• permethrin
Another type, carbaryl, is only available on prescription from your GP. He or she may prescribe this if the infestation has not been cleared by other insecticides.
Insecticides for treating lice are either alcohol or water-based. Alcohol-based insecticides aren't suitable for everyone, particularly if you have eczema or asthma, so it's usually recommended that you use water-based products. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding you should try to use wet combing instead and might like to try non-toxic solutions. The general advice is to check with your GP or health visitor before using any insecticides. Don't use insecticides to treat children under the age of two - use wet combing if possible.
As you can imagine with any insecticide you should always follow the instructions carefully. Usually the insecticide lotion should be rubbed onto your scalp and hair (or your child's) and left for at least 12 hours before you wash it out. Shampoos and foams aren't recommended because they don't remain in contact with the lice long enough to kill them.
Insecticide treatments kill living lice, but may not kill the eggs of head lice. You will need to repeat the treatment a week later to get rid of any lice that have hatched since the first treatment.
2. Treating Nits and Head Lice with Nit Combs
Secondly, you can use nit combs on head lice eggs. Whilst this is undoubtedly an effective low cost method of nit treatment, it is also incredibly time consuming and if you miss just one egg or louse then re-infection is inevitable.
There are a number of different nit combs available but all of them involve a considerable amount of time and effort and are best used in conjunction with a solution to dissolve the nit glue.
3. Natural Non-Toxic Nit-Nurse
The third method is to use a natural formulation such as Nit Nurse which is a non-toxic, natural formula that provides a safe alternative to get rid of nits to today’s chemical-based hair nit treatments, effectively removing both head lice and lice nits in one simple treatment, stopping hair itching fast.
