If you suspect your child has hair lice or nits your first step to get rid should be to check that there are in fact live lice in the hair. In some cases the hair may have become the temporary home for insects and bugs picked up on the playing field or in the garden and are not head lice or nits in the hair.
These pictures will help you decide if your child has live head lice or nits in their hair. If there are only nits (head lice eggs) in the hair then you should not need to use an insecticide shampoo. You can however use a safe non-toxic solution that eradicates live head lice and is effective against their eggs or nits in the hair. A product which dissolves the 'glue' the nits attach themselves to the hair shaft will help with their removal.
